Asphalt roofing shingles come in two forms: organic and fiber glass. Both are relatively affordable, require simple installation and are durable.

Organic roofing shingle is made from combining paper with asphalt, including adhesive asphalt, and clay particles are added to the top layer of the shingle. All organic shingles are water proof, and there are also those that are algae and moss-proof, which utilize copper coating.

Fiber glass roofing shingles are made by combining urea-formaldehyde resin with wet fiber glass. Like organic shingles, the asphalt coating makes fiber glass shingles water proof as well. Moreover, fiber glass shingle roofs are highly resistant to fire.
